Christianity became so popular overnight because it was a political move. A guy in Gaul was a pagan and was going to war with Italy he praised the Christian God and won, so he turned over to Christianity. all of a sudden people started seeing Christianity was growing and it would be the best thing to make it the empires religion. This way they would stop a riot from happenin and make all the Christians happy, if people did not like Christianity they could do nothing about t since it was the emperors decision.
