retreat by catia
I LOVED THE ICE CREAM WE HAD ON THURSDAY NIGHT!!! The game we played was fun too. I think that before this retreat I had not thought about my spiritual journey but now i have. It was very interesting to get to know our teachers from a more friendly point of view rather than student to teacher. We also had more personal moments with them than we do in school. The location of the retreat was great also. It was beautiful being near the lake and waking up with such a nice view. I had nice moments with my friends and teachers. The trivia game we played of teachers was quite fun. it was interesting and fun getting to learn fun facts of our teachers. I think it is amazing that Miss. Cromwell won 3 world championships of horseback riding and that Mr. Marshall was born orange like a pumpkin. I still regret putting that Mr. Macy was born in Japan because i knew he was born in Arizona and my team decided to put otherwise. Retreat was fun and i enjoyed it.

11th grade
Church History is a class were we learn about christianity and the church. This week as we approach retreat we think learning about the history of the church and christianity can make us better christians and we can understand the messages of the Bible in a better way. also seeing various examples of conversion like the one of Augustine we can try to be like him and decide at retreat to convert our lives or just to be better persons, to communicate in a better way with our friends and family. Retreat can be whatever we want to but we should take advantage of it and try to renew our spiritual life and be better christians. We will have 3 days with our teachers as spiritual guides and in a relaxing place, and in church history it may not have been the same but various persons throughout the history of christianity have had similar experiences as the one we are offered at retreat so lets go with open hearts and try to understand the messages we hear.

Pope Leo and Gregory the Great
we talked about Gregory the Great who became pope against his own will.
Gregory was only 50 years old but chronically ill.
when he heard that he had been elected to the papal office he hid in a forest but people find him and in the end he became pope.
Prior to become pope gregory was mayor of rome and then a Benedictine monk.
Like Augustine struggled with sexual sins Gregory struggled with the sin of pride.
Gregory was a a great missionary, sending monks throughout the barbarian world. He was also a great defender of orthodoxy.
An other character we talked about was Pope Leo III.
He was charged with the crimes of perjury and adultery.
Pope Leo appealed to the traditional protector of the papacy, the King of the Franks, Charles the Great(also known as Charlemagne)
The Pope Charlemagne as emperor of the Christian Roman Empire.
Charlemagne had expanded and united his kingdom through military victory and leadership.
After his death, a dominating personality, the empire was too vast and the nobility too powerful, for the empire to hold togehther.
Antonio's Answer
i learned that Pope Leo III was as human as all of us. he was charged with the crimes of perjury and adultery. that is normal in humans because we all sin all the time. Pope Leo also, after his aquital, crowned Charlemagne as emperor of the Christian Roman empire. these are some of the most important things we learned during the 3rd quarter.
3rd quarter so far. Catia
Some characters we have studied are Pope Leo, Charlemagne, Gregory, Benedict, Gregory the Great, and Augustine. All these characters have been involved in church history. Gregory and Leo were popes. Others like Benedict and Augustine are saints. Both of them also instituted monk orders like the Benedictine monks and the Augustinian monks. Some of this characters have peculiar stories behind them. For example Gregory did not want to be pope. He was a monk and therefore had to be obedient and accepted the charge but he did not want to. In fact when he was told that he would be pope he ran and hid in a forest and would not come out. Saint Augustine on the other hand struggled with sexual sins. He had many wives and children. He once prayed to God for God to help him change, but later, not then. Augustine is a special person I think because of all the people we have studied he is the one I can most sympathize with. He was more of a normal person and had the normal temptations all of us have. Some of this persons are so righteous and always follow the Christian pathway but Augustine struggled a lot with many things just like any human being. Although the popes were a religious figure I can see a lot of political influence in their job. We can see this when for example Pope Leo was sent to settle down some issues when the Vandals came to invade Rome. Pope Leo was also sent to make peace when Atila the Hut when he as well came to invade Rome.
From person to person we have gone seeing how they have influenced Christianity. We saw the break in christianity of the Roman orthodox church and the Eastern orthodox church. Also we saw how the papacy started having political influence in the Roman empire and so on.

we have studied many things so far. we have also talked about lots of people, for example Tertulian, origen, cyprean and others. we have also talked about some popes, i think this is really important for people to know. i think this because we have to know history in order to not commit the same error twice. knowing about church history makes me feel like a better christian because i actually know the base of what i believe. Before i only believed in what i heard but i didn't actually know from where it came. this year we have been learning a lot, and i really appreciate this. Our teacher is also REALLY nice! probably the best teacher we have ever had!!! :D

This quarter we've talking about many things. We've talked about the separation of the church, and how they were separated by a single event. We've also studied about some saints that helped spreading christianity in the ancient world. For example saint Augustine founding the English church. We also talked about Pope Gregory the great and how he helped in the development of christian theology.
Chptrs. 9-18 From "Laying her Sceptre DOwn" to "The Search For Unity" by Alejandra R.
In our way from chapter 9 to chapter 18 we have learned about some every interesting people. We have seen how different empires and how they have risen to then decline, we have seen how so many people have influenced christianity to form what we have and follow today. We have learned about how Christianity changed from being a hidden thing to being a common practice in the world.
For example we learned about Constantine and how he exposed Christianity through out the whole world. Constantine was not a Christian since the beginning of his life, he converted in to Christianity when he was an emperor. Constantine had to face a battle following Galerius' death to gain imperial power. Prior to the battle constantine had a dream in which he saw a cross in the sky and the words "conquer" in it. Constantine won the battle and he took this as a sign of the power of Christ and the superiority of the Christian religion. AFter his conversion COnstantine abolished crucifixion and he made Sunday a public holiday. Some people doubt Of Constantine's conversion, however he did play a very important role in the history of christianity. Thanks to Constantine Christianity was exposed and was made legal.
