The Great Papal Schism
this lasted for 39 years. each pope had his own College of Cardinals...isureing the papal succesion of its own choice. each and every pope claimed that they were the true Vicar of Christ. this person had the power to excumunicate those who did not acknoledge him. in 1395 leading proffessors at the university of Paris proposed that a general councl should meet to heal the schism.the question was which pope had the rights to ratify any decision? the Canon Law prohibited the reunion of Christendom
